Stories have been a very powerful and engaging tool used in education along time. Storytelling has been part of humanity since we started to communicate with each other. Many cultures passed their history through oral tradition, folktales and music.

Nowadays, technology has become fundamental in everyday life. That is the reason why we as teachers should take advantage of this kind of technology. Students who are actually using this tool are better prepared to fluently speak and to comprehend spoken language, read and write competently.

 

 

WHAT IS IT?

 

 

 It is a technological way of combining stories with digital media such as videos, graphs, audio narration or music in order to illustrate any subject.

Stories are usually short (2 to 5 minutes) and contain a particular point of view. Digital Storytelling enables communication and social participation.

 

HOW DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

 

Digital stories come in all sizes and shapes, from a simple video blog that recounts an interesting episode to a more sophisticated treatment that follows a narrative arc and relies primarily on images and found materials. A digital story usually combines 15 to 30 still images and a recorded script of 100 to 250 words to create an original personal digital story in the form of a 2 to 3 minutes digital video.

  • Choose a story you really like.
  • Read the story silently several times, picturing the story in your mind as you read.
  • Read the story out loud to your partner.
  • Visualize, or picture in your mind, all the details of the story and discuss this with your partner.
