WHAT IS SOCIAL BOOKMARKING?
Nowadays, technology gives users the chance to categorize, store, share, and search webpages in an easier and faster way by using social bookmarkings such as del.icio.us or digg.
Users link webpages of their interest to their bookmarks using tags ((keywords that allow easy searching and grouping of content). However, the benefit of social bookmarking goes beyond storing websites since the stored information can be shared either to friends, family, coworkers or complete strangers.
The information that exists in the bookmarks can be seen by others chronologically, by category or tasks, or via a search engine anywhere in the world. It can be added to others’ bookmarks or shared with even more users.
HISTORY
It starts in 1996 with the launch of the website Lists.com. It was the first site to use the concept of shared bookmarks.
A few years later some companies such as Backflip, Blink, Clip2, Hotlinks and Quiver followed this idea. However these companies failed to make an impact on the market due to the dot com crash in 2001.
In 2003 del.icio.us launched its own tag related social bookmarking site. In a short period of time this company expanded very quickly, and this led to other companies to follow its lead. So in the next years other companies such as Simpy, Furl, Stumbleupon, Netvouz, Diigo, Digg, Reddit, Newsvine joined the dispute and expanded on the principles of social bookmarking.
At the present, Social Bookmarking is growing very fast. This is happening because users have realized they can gather information on specific topics from a single source.
TYPES
There are two different main types of social bookmarking sites: voting sites and the standard sites.
- Voting sites, such as Digg, Stumble, Upon and Mixx allow users to vote for the bookmarks of others and create a ranking on the site itself. Basically whoever's bookmarks are found interesting are voted for and then ranked according to how many votes they have received. The ultimate goal is to get enough votes to be on the front page, which gives the most exposure.
- Standard social bookmarking sites such as Delicious, furl, Blinklist and Ma.gnolia. allow users merely store and share their bookmarks with others. These bookmarks can serve a specific purpose and are found to be quite useful to users.
